San Antonio, Texas – Dec. 13, 2017 – Following a full day of important rule change proposal discussions on Tuesday, December 12 during the USHJA Annual Meeting, presented by World Equestrian Center, the 2017 USHJA Evening of Equestrians, presented by USHJA Zone 7, brought laughs, tears and standing ovations as USHJA recognized 18 exceptional members for their contributions to the sport and outstanding achievements.
Cheryl Rubenstein of Memphis, Tennessee, was awarded the prestigious USHJA Volunteer of the Year Award. Rubenstein serves as a Board member, on the Executive Committee, USHJA Foundation, Audit Committee, and is chair of the Awards Committee. Last December, she was elected to represent USHJA on the USEF National Breeds and Disciplines Council. She has served in a variety of roles over the last eight years and is an avid Adult Amateur competitor.
“She gives 110 percent to each of the committees on which she serves, performing her tasks with passion and enthusiasm,” said USHJA President Mary Babick of Rubenstein. “She truly goes above and beyond in her commitment to serving the organization as well as our members.”
Rubenstein said the award “is a tremendous honor,” but it was also a big surprise to her, even though she chairs the USHJA Awards Committee. She had no idea she was to be the recipient until the night of the awards dinner. Rubenstein said this is one of only two awards that are decided independently of the Awards Committee, the other being the President’s Distinguished Service Award. The others are nomination based awards.
Rubenstein is a life-long member of WTHJA. She is especially proud, and it is personally important to her, that west Tennessee is recognized on the national stage. Rubenstein and her horses also received 2017 WTHJA Year End awards. Capisce (ridden by Jason Schnelle) is WTHJA 2017 Green Hunter 3’6”/3’9” Champion and Performance 3’3”/3’6” Champion. Her other horse Riesling, shown by Rubenstein, is Reserve in WTHJA 2017 Modified Child/Adult Hunter division and USHJA Zone Champion for WTHJA 2017.
