Keeping its after-Thanksgiving tradition, the Mid-South Quarter Horse Association (MSQHA) offered an alternative to leftover turkey, football, and frenzied Black Friday shopping. The annual MSQHA Turkey Circuit Quarter Horse show returned to the Paul Battle Arena in Tunica, Mississippi on November 24-26, 2017. This was the last of MSQHA’s four-show season, and the last chance to earn points toward Circuit Awards. Show Secretary Pat Kress called the weekend show “A great alternative to Black Friday shopping.”
Exhibitors at the show were encouraged visit the vendors’ trailers to support Small Business Saturday shopping. Vendors included LuxLooks Show Clothes, Trails End Western Wear and Tack, and Ferguson Tack Store.
This year’s show had an added Friday night delight – IBRA Cold Turkey Barrel Race, followed by AQHA barrel racing after the Open race. With over 200 entries, the 4D barrel racing was deemed a big success, and will become a traditional part of next year’s show. There was $4,000 added money and Side Pots offering 80% payback.
Even though QH show entries have been a little down across the board this year, with four judges, this show still counted about 1,025 class entries. Judges for the show were: Kristi Starnes, Karen Waters, Rob Menelly, and John Dean.
Saturday morning’s show started with the Pleasure Driving classes, followed by a morning full of Halter Classes; afterward were the Showmanship and Western Riding classes, all exhibiting to all four judges. After the break, Starnes and Waters were back in the pen to judge the Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and English riding classes, including Hunter Under Saddle and Equitation. Ranch Horse Riding, with added money, and Reining classes completed Saturday’s offerings. Meanwhile, in the arena behind the stables, Menelly and Dean judged the Trail classes.
Sunday started back with Ranch Horse and Reining classes, this time under the discerning eyes of Menelly and Dean. Then the riding took a break for Cowboy Sunday School. After the break it was time for the remainder of the Walk/Trot classes, Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and finishing with Hunter and Equitation Classes. In the meantime, Starnes and Waters judged the trail classes in the back pen.
