After the exciting $5,000 Gamblers Choice jumper class on Thursday evening (June 8, 2017), the jumps were cleared and six barrels were set up, three at each end of the arena, for the exciting Carriage Barrel Races – yes, barrel racing in the driving venue.
First to go were Pam Anderson and her veteran driving/riding horse Rebel, completing their run in a leisurely time of 72.269.
Then came Nora Land driving Molly, speeding around the course in a blistering time of 46.375! This was the leading time to beat.
The next team, Bush Farm Louisiana Lyric, Kaylee Bartozzi driving for owner Ann Kimberlin, tried, but only rounded the barrels in a time of 55.982.
The next team, with Rollingwoods Back In Black, Mary Francis Mangum driving,posted a better time of 51.412, but still not enough to win.
Next in the arena was the elegant and flashy Rollingwoods Cookie Thief, Claudia Mangum driving. He pranced his way around the barrels in a time of 64.124.
Then came laid back Naughty Pierre, Stephanie James driving, posting another leisurely drive with a time of 89.791.
Speeding into the arena came GCHS Princess Sarah Foster, driving, in her Princess attire, grey pony Lacey. It was clear she would have a fast time, but enough to beat Molly? Not yet; coming through the finish line her time was 53.828.
The birthday gal, Rose Marie Lawson (we won’t say how old she turned on June 8, 2017) driving Milo was next to round the barrels, completing the course in a time of 61.666. Not too shabby!
A determined Maria Roberts was next, driving Raydar with Michael Tokaruk navigating – the jumper team turns to driving. Still, they were not fast enough to beat Molly, turning the barrels in 56.682.
Members of the Lawson family were back in the arena, with Laura Shifflette Lawson driving KT Barnabus and passenger Trey Lawson looking relaxed as if on a leisurely Sunday drive. They turned in a time of 70.885.
Saving the highly competitive, not-to-be-outdone Joanna Wilburn for last, the stakes were raised again as she blasted into the arena with Rollingwoods Berry Last One. Wilburn crossed the finished line in 45.863, besting Molly by just 0.512 seconds! The Berry Last One was the winner!
