The University of Tennessee at Martin athletics department is saddened to announce that Coy Lutz, who recently completed his freshman season on the UT Martin rodeo team, passed away on Saturday evening (May 28, 2016).

Lutz, 19 of Howard, Pennsylvania, was fatally injured while competing in the bareback bronc riding event on the opening night of the Cowtown Rodeo in Pilesgrove, NJ. Authorities say he was knocked off the horse and then stepped on several times by the horse. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.

Lutz was bucked off and then stepped on several times by H3, the horse he had been riding.

This was the second season that Lutz had competed at the Cowtown Rodeo series. He bought his PRCA permit last March, two months after his 18th birthday, and divided his first year between college rodeos and competition in the First Frontier Circuit.

At the 48th Annual UT-Martin Spring College Rodeo on the weekend of April 14, Lutz scored 78 points in the first round and 76 points in the short go for a 154 average. His opening round score was best in the field, while his average score was tied for the top total in the event, according to UT-Martin.

“He was a nice kid, a really nice kid from a nice family,” Cowtown Rodeo owner/producer Grant Harris told NJ.com. “It's tragic and traumatic to everyone in our industry.”

Coy's parents, Doug and Sabine Lutz, were among the crowd of 2,200 who witnessed the accident.

In a Facebook posting May 29, Cowtown Rodeo and the Harris Family extended their “heartfelt and sincere condolences to the Lutz Family for the tragic loss of their son, Coy. During this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with all those who knew and loved him.”

This year marked the 62nd season of the Cowtown Rodeo.
Our deepest sympathies go to the family of Coy Lutz:  Jan. 7, 1997 - May 28, 2016.
