UT Martin Men’s Rodeo Captures Fourth Win

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team posted its fourth win of the season while the women’s squad tallied its fifth top-three finish at Arkansas-Monticello April 16-18.      

On the men’s side, UT Martin recorded 840 points for a commanding double-up victory over second-place Missouri Valley College (420 points). The women’s team notched 265 points, which was 110 points behind winner Arkansas-Monticello (375).

Three cowboys earned points for UT Martin in bareback riding. Colt Kitaif ranked second in the short go (75) while splitting second in average (145) and finishing third in the first round (70). Tanner Phipps’ first round performance of 76 was the best out in the field while he also split second with Kitaif in average (145) and finished fifth in the short go (69). Houston Herbert also contributed points to UT Martin’s total with a fourth-place effort in the short go (70).

Jacob Dagenhart and Lane Mitchell performed well in calf roping for UT Martin. Dagenhart’s time of 9.6 in the short go was the best of any cowboy in the field while he split first in average (19) and ranked fourth in the first round (9.4). Mitchell also recorded points in all three opportunities (20.1 average, split fourth; 9.5 first go and 10.6 short go, both fifth place).

In breakaway roping, Casey Cox earned second-place finishes in both average (5.8) and short go (3.1).

Trey Lloyd stood out in the steer wrestling event, placing first with a 9.1 average after finishing second in the first round (4.3) and third in the short go (4.8). Mitchell was also responsible for team points in the event, placing sixth in the opening round with a time of 5.8.

UT Martin earned several points in team roping, led by the duo of Clark Adcock and Mitchell. Their 6.3 effort in the first go ranked first while they also placed second in average (15.3) and fourth in the short go (9.0). Lloyd teamed with West Alabama’s Lucas Brown to finish second in the first round (6.6) and fifth in both the short go (13.4) and average (20.0). The UT Martin team of Dagenhart and Zack Mabry also tallied points in the second round (8.1, second) and in average (19.3, fourth).

The women’s team did a majority of its damage in barrel racing, as three UT Martin cowgirls accounted for points. Dacia Horne led the pack with a top finish in average (30.66) and in the short go (15.32) while ranking third in the first round (15.34). Ashley Brooks split first in the opening round with a time of 15.28 while Nealey Dalton (15.7 second round, fourth; 31.36 average, fifth) also secured team points for UT Martin.

UT Martin concludes the regular season April 23-25 in Senatobia, Miss. with a rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College.
