The Palomino Horse Breeders of America annual World Championship Show was held July 9-20, 2014 in Tunica, MS. Viewers could watch a webcast of the show on the PHBA website.
The first week of the show was the PHBA Youth World Show, with the youth in several age categories riding for the four judges: Kelly Boles Chapman of Bellevue, MI; Terry Goble, Sr. of Dalton, GA; John Lethan of Yukon, OK; and Michael Ochetto of Henderson, TX.
The Youth show began with Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and Riding classes on Wednesday July 9. Thursday’s classes started with the Halter horses and finished with Showmanship. Friday was Youth Hunt Seat day, with Flag Race, Barrels, and Poles finishing out the competition. Saturday’s classes began with Youth Trail and finished with the Youth Golden Horse Awards.
A special feature of Sunday’s July 13 show were the Challenged Horseman classes, with all divisions represented from Horsemanship/Showmanship to Hunt Seat classes to Trail and Western riding. In the Walk-Trot Showmanship class, it was Daryl Madden taking home first place with Savana Floyd’s Dandy Zipper. In Walk-Trot-Lope Showmanship, Sabrina Griffin was the winner with Invest With A Chex. In Junior Western Pleasure, Immortal Entertainer, shown by Leonard Lee Berryhill, was Champion. Skips Tama Leaguer, with Lu Lu Stewart Keen aboard, was Champion in Junior Trail.
The second week began the PHBA World Championship Show, with eight judges for the Amateur and Open divisions: Joe Carter of St. George, Ontario Canada; Clint Fulerton of Kansas City, MO; Manita McKool DeFoor of Temple, GA; Sherry Haynes of Stephenville, TX; Jeff Lechner of McHenry, IL; Don McDuffee of Ocala, FL; Pete McAlister of Mitchell, IN; and Bennie Sargent of Paris, KY. The show began with the stallions on Monday, July 14: Weanling and Yearling Stallions through Performance Halter Stallions and Senior Stallions; finishing the day’s showing with Junior Western Pleasure and Trail classes. Stallions dominated the day’s showing on Tuesday July 15, finishing the day’s showing with Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and Riding. Wednesday July 16 was “ladies day,” beginning with Weanling Mares through Performance Halter Mares and Senior Mares. The Amateur Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, Pleasure, and Riding classes rounded out the show day. Thursday July 17 started with the Mares again, followed by the fast action classes: Pole Bending, Flag Race, and Barrel Racing. The culmination of the evening’s classes were the Heritage Foundation Halter and Pleasure classes. Geldings starting the morning’s showing on Friday, July 18 and the afternoon’s classes were devoted to Hunt Seat classes. Saturday July 19 began with Pleasure Driving, then it was back to the Halter Geldings followed by the Stock Horse and Ranch Horse and Reining classes. The last day of showing presented the Working Cow Horses, Tie Down roping, Breakaway Roping, Heading, and Heeling.
In Performance Halter Stallions, Knight of Stars, owned and shown by J. Benham Stewart, Jr. was Champion. Classic Clu, shown by Ted Turner, Jr., owned by Dr. Hugh and Rosemary Leggett, Jr., swept the Aged Stallions and Premier Halter Stallions classes.
In the Amateur Trail and Novice Amateur Trail classes, Peponitas Chic Olena was 2-time Champion, owned and shown by Diane Stenborg. Skipsa Gold Leaguer, owned and shown by Lorrie Partridge was Champion in Amateur Select Trail and Amateur Select Showmanship 50 & over and in Performance Halter Mares, where she was shown by Lu Lu Stewart Keen. Diane Stenborg and Peponitas Chic Olena were Reserve in Amateur Select Trail.
In the fast action Amateur Barrel Racing and Senior Barrel Racing, Paris Firewater and Jennifer Arnold of Smyrna, TN scored the Championships. Johnny On The Rocks and Randa Kellogg had the win in Junior Barrel Racing. In the Amateur Flag Race, Amateur Stake Race, and Senior Pole Bending, Pocos Rainy Leo won the Championships with Rhonda E. Glanzer, DVM of Winnie, TX aboard.
Taking home the Championship and money prize in the NSBA/PHBA Amateur Western Pleasure Stakes was Twentyfourkaratchip, owned and shown by Teresa Porter of Calhoun, LA. Champion in the NSBA/PHBA 2-year-old Snaffle Bit Open Western Pleasure was Vanilla Yella, shown by D. J. Beam and owned by Vicki Coffman of Columbus, IN.
Champion in Amateur Western Pleasure was Laura Bracken on Tackyn Sophisticated.
