A highlight of the racing season at Kentucky Downs racetrack in Franklin, KY, just a short drive north of Nashville, TN, is the Kentucky Turf Cup. The race is a Grade III turf race open to horses age three and older; it is contested at a distance of 1½ miles (12 furlongs) on a European-style turf course. This year’s race featured Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens taking the win on Temeraine. Temeraine is trained by Thomas Proctor, and raced under the stable name Niall Racing, which is named for the horse's breeders Michael and Donard Niall. The horse's ownership is the father-son duo of Timothy and Patrick Turney.
“Favored Temeraine, given a rail-skipping trip by Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, slipped through for a neck victory in the $399,000 Kentucky Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs September 14.” Temeraine is a 5-year-old, dark bay, son of Arch, and “out of the multiple stakes-winning Known Fact mare Lonely Fact. He was bred in Kentucky by Donald and Michael Niall,” described Jack Shinar for The Bloodhorse.
Stevens rode the horse for the first time in the 1 ½ mile event to win over the seven horse field in a time of 2:29.18. Temeraine won the duel to the wire over a game Olympic Thunder.
“Olympic Thunder, who took the lead from pacesetter Whatthecatdrugin entering the homestretch for Alan Garcia, was edged for the win while finishing one length clear of Suntracer and Eddie Castro,” wrote Shinar.
The jockey on this year’s sixth place horse, Corey Lanerie, was the 2012 Kentucky Turf Cup winner aboard Ioya Bigtime. Record time for the race was set in 2007 by General Jumbo at 2:26.98.

Rosie Napravnik, who's the fifth leading jockey in the country, topped the Kentucky Downs' standings with eight wins this season.
In his first trip around the unique course, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens rode the winner of the $400,000 Kentucky Turf Cup, Temeraine. Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who were the leading owners at the Saratoga meeting, topped the Kentucky Downs standings with a record nine wins.
Wayne Catalano, who sits securely atop the trainers' standings at Arlington Park near Chicago, assumed the same position at Kentucky Downs with 10 victories this racing season.
“What impressed me most about the season," said Corey Johnsen, Kentucky Downs’ President, "was that we had top quality horses, trainers and jockeys from all over the country. And, in my opinion, we had some terrific races, showcasing our great sport at the highest level.”
