Since 2000, Double B Productions, managed by Renea Beech Bolling, has promoted barrel racing events throughout the Midwest. This year, their Cowgirl Tuff Tour, sponsored by the Cowgirl Tuff Company, brought them further East to the Shelby Showplace Arena in Memphis, TN. The 2013 Cowgirl Tuff Tour boasts quality awards with 8 saddles, 9 buckles and 50 leather coats to be given to year end divisional point winners. The tour is composed of 14 separate barrel races spanning from the Dakotas to Illinois.
To qualify for year end awards, competitors must ride in at least three of the 14 Barrel Bash events in the Cowgirl Tuff Tour. Points are awarded through 20th place in Open 4D and through 10th place in 5D. The overall year end points winner in each division will be awarded a trophy saddle, provided by Top Hand Saddle Company, while places second through tenth will receive a leather coat. Buckles will be awarded to top divisional riders within the Youth, Adult and Senior groups. Champion Futurity and Derby horses will also receive saddles.
Boasting no membership or nomination fees, and promising 3 days full of great barrel racing from June 14-16, the Barrel Bash drew over 350 entries. Barrel racers came from near and far, some aiming for qualifying points, while others were simply drawn to the $5500 added money. The arena was busy all day Friday with warm-ups and exhibitions; everyone was preparing for the $2000 added money Open 5D that began that evening. At the end of the night, Jennifer Arnold, of Smyrna, TN, and her mare Paris Firewater came out on top clocking 14.803. Mary Pilgrim and Matildas Grey Sage won the 2D with 15.354. Only a second off the leader, Lisa Beldsoe and Special Dashing Jet clocked at 15.824, earning them 3D honors. Jamie Barker and Jetta landed right for the 4D with 16.308, and Reagan Adkins and Hop Scotch won the 5D with 16.813.
Saturday's competition kicked off at 11a.m. with the $100 added money Youth. Jacki Richardson of Leon, IA came out on top of the Youth group on her mount KPS Firewater, stopping the clock at 15.101. Molly Below and Teques Candy Lady topped the 2D with 16.623, and Lexi Henderson clenched the 3D with 17.227 on Shining Medallion.
The Open 5D started shortly thereafter running 127 entries and offering $2000 added money. Grant Patterson of Chapel Hill, MO and his mount Blue Ribbon Brownie were a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the weekend. They set the pace on Saturday with a smoking 14.708. Kendra Kerr and Bullets A Driftin topped the 2D with 15.210, while Jessica Whittinghill and Dashing Jazzy clenched the 3D with 15.714. The 4D and 5D were won by Annette Payne and IMA Badger Girl Too with 16.265 and Meredith Wilburn on Docs Cuttin Lena with 16.734.
Many folks spent Father's Day barrel racing, as Sunday's $2000 added money Open 5D kept people at the show grounds, running over 100 entries. The competition could not catch up to Grant Patterson and Blue Ribbon Brownie. They stopped the clock at 14.743, ensuring them first in the 1D. Morgan Brown and High Flyin Bugs won the 2D with 15.26 and Angie Thomas ran 15.763 on Romances Lil Lovey, topping the 3D. The 4D was won by Mollie Carter on Peppy Bo Jangles with 16.328 and Karly McCall and AK47 ran 16.777, clenching the 5D.
