February 29 2012. Something strange has been deposited in the east-bound right lane of the Hernando Desoto Bridge spanning the Mississippi River from West Memphis, Arkansas to Memphis Tennessee. That strange deposit is horse manure, left by three horses and a mule, one of the horses ridden by Cowboy for a Cure Johnny Warnshuis of Redding, California. He was accompanied for the day by two local companions Rusty and Kimberleigh Waters from Stone Hill Ranch in Mayflower, Arkansas. The trio and pack horse were being protected on Interstate 40 by Arkansas State Troopers with blue lights flashing.
Johnny is riding alone on horseback across the United States to raise money and awareness for several charities. The original charity, GBS/CIDP Foundation International, is an organization doing research to find a cure for Guillain-Barré Syndrome/Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (GBS/CIDP) which is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Johnny's Mother, Sally Warnshuis has recently fallen victim to the disease. Sally is still in recovery and currently living in Redding, CA. Sally is so proud of her son, and supportive of his journey for the cause.
The other Charities are The John Wayne Cancer Foundation, Autistic Children, Polycystic Kidney Disease, and the Leukemia Foundation. He requests that any donations to these charities go directly to the organizations. Leaving Redding CA on March 27, 2011, Johnny has traveled 2,800 miles so far, riding as much as possible off the roads. “I never carry more than $100 in cash, but I haven’t starved yet,” he said. People along the way have been very generous with feed, hay and stabling for his horses.
He spent four months in the desert on Hopei, Navajo and Pueblo Reservations. On a stop outside Reno, Nevada he went behind a restaurant to water his rescued mustang and metSherree Hogg, the woman who is now his fiancé. The couple plan to wed in Central Park in New York City, on horseback of course, but he has a few more miles to go.
