(Knoxville, TN) -- The long-awaited renovation and expansion of the Equine and Farm Animal Hospitals at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is underway. The project is essential to our commitment to the people and animals of Tennessee and across the southeastern states. The $20.9 million project encompasses almost 85,000 square feet and targeted completion date is February 2013.
Designed to meet the needs of the animal industries throughout the region for several generations to come, the expansion will help us protect the food supply from farm to fork, provide the most advanced technologies and medical therapies available, meet all the medical needs of our equine owners and industries in one location (eliminating the need to trailer horses out of state), and ensure we are able to maintain our responsibility to provide a strong teaching program for our veterinary students.
New equine space will include a permanent MRI unit and expanded surgical and isolation space. Our new farm animal hospital will include standing and recumbent farm animal surgery suites and a secure off-loading facility. A separate 32,000 sq.ft facility will house our new equine orthopedic diagnostic center, allowing us to provide contemporary equine diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitative therapies.
Currently, all Large Animal clients/patients will access the Hospital via the new entrance off Jacob Drive. The automatic gate will open when vehicles approach within 4 feet of the gate and will close approximately 60 seconds after a vehicle has entered/exited the new gravel lot.
