Taber Is Beautiful is the story of a horse who struggles with a facial flaw: a mole on her nose. With an encouraging mother and friends who never leave her side, Taber learns the importance of inner beauty and inner strength. The book is for children ages 4-9 and is available at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. Illustrations by Melinda McPherson.
“Taber is a beautiful horse with a dark chocolate coat and a golden mane,” the book begins, “who was best known in town for her grace, friendliness and … that large mole on her nose.” The story continues at “Mane Elementary,” where Taber attends and hangs out with her friends, but also encounters social ostracism from the guys. “Hey Taber,” called Vince, “I was wondering why do you have that awful mole on your nose? None of us have one. It looks really weird,” he snorted… The ridicule brings embarrassment to Taber, as well as trying to rub it off, and she asks her mother why she has the mole. “Taber, you were born with that mole on your nose and it is not going to come off,” Taber’s mother mare explains. “But Taber, you are beautiful. Beauty comes from the inside. Never worry about the things people say about how you look.” But, of course, when focusing on a “flaw,” it seems to appear bigger than it is and won’t go away. Author Samantha DeGrasse started her writing career at age 8, writing in her journals and participating in theater arts. She grew up in the Bronx, and throughout high school and college acted in off Broadway plays and performed in children's plays every weekend. In 2006 she self published her first children's book, Jordan and the Red Silk Scarf, and in 2011 her second children's book, Taber is Beautiful. She lives in Atlanta, GA with her two children.
