The Brewer Equestrian Center in Shannon, MS hosted the Jive Turkey and Jumpin Event Derby November 19, 2011. Dressage tests began Saturday at 8:30 a.m. judged by Evie Tumlin of Cedar Wind Farms.
We had riders and horses from several barns in the surrounding area come to show and school our courses, such as Blue Ribbon Riding Academy in Jackson, MS. Showcase Equestrian Center in Eads, TN brought 7 horses, including the only purebred Clydesdale in the U.S. that jumps, named Premium Draft. All together, we had about 80 participants.
Dressage wrapped up around 11 a.m., and as riders finished their dressage tests, they made their way to the cross country course. In an event derby, the cross country and show jumping course is combined. Riders warmed up over fences and then started their cross country trip. The average time was between 1:70 and 2:15, with all levels of riders making their way around the course.
We offered several divisions as to make sure that everyone had a fair shot at bringing home a ribbon.
Gag A- riders could run the course, but choose to jump or not.
Gag B- riders must jump the 18-inch fences, but don’t have a optimum time to meet.
Restricted Beginner Novice - riders must jump all jumps, at 2 ft. to 2 ft. 3 in.
Beginner Novice - riders must jump all jumps, at 2 ft. 6 in. to 2 ft. 9 in.
Novice - riders must jump all jumps, set at 3 ft. to 3 ft. 3 in.
After a delicious spaghetti lunch, we held the jumper classes, with fences ranging from 2 ft. to 3 ft. 6 in.
“The show was so successful that we are planning a spring show,” said Trainer/ Barn Manager Chelsea Robinson.
Brewer Equestrian Center is a schooling/ competition barn that offers lessons to all ages and levels of riding. “We work with the United States Pony Club, so kids learn proper horse management and safety while learning to ride the various disciplines correctly. The horse community in Tupelo, MS is small, but growing, and we love getting people of all ages involved in such a wonderful sport,” said Robinson. Robinson is new to the Tupelo area, but has been riding and showing for about 19 years, working with such trainers as Aaron Vale, Sergio Campos, Jim Graham and David Adamo.
