The Youth and Teens of NBHA TN-05 competed at the 2011 NBHA Youth World Championships July 25 – 30 in Jackson, Mississippi at the Kirk Fordice Arena.
The event is invitation only – competitors must ride in their respective NBHA District Barrel Races to earn points. The top five point earners in each division qualify for the NBHA Youth World Show.
This year there were over 900 contestants in the Teen Division (13 and over) and over 600 in the Youth Division (12 and under). Contestants came from all over the U. S., Canada, Italy, and Australia to compete for over $200,000 dollars in cash and prizes, including a 2011 Four Star Horse Trailer, saddles, buckles, jackets and more.
The NBHA Youth World Show is one of the largest Barrel Races in the World. Each contestant makes two runs to qualify for the Finals, which is held on the last day. The top 15 contestants in each division, from both the Teens and the Youth, qualify for the Finals. Those top qualifiers make a third run to vie for the top ranking of Youth and Teen Barrel Racer in the World. The Winner of the Youth Class was Abbi Holliday, from Poplarville, MS with a time of 14.819. The Teen Winner was Summer Huff from Pensacola, FL with a time of 14.673.
NBHA District TN-05 had 25 contestants qualify for the Youth World Show. Three of these contestants, Jordan Rice, Dylan Cochran and Wesley Haley made it to the Finals. Unfortunately, they did not place in the final run, but just making it to the Finals is quite an accomplishment!
Not only was the competition fierce in the arena, it was also fierce in the Idol Contest and The Spirit Parade. At night after the Barrel Racing was finished, the water balloon and water gun fights began all over the arena grounds. These kids had a blast during that week! They had the opportunity to compete in top barrel racing, made lot of new friends from all over the world, and enjoyed a week of fun filled, family oriented events, like the frisbee toss, the coke race, and ice cream party.
The Youth and Teens of NBHA TN-05 are again competing hard at the local level for a chance to return to the NBHA Youth World Show in 2012. We wish them lots of luck!
