Dawn broke Saturday morning, July 16, with cooler temperatures and some cloud cover. This was good news for Rose Marie Lawson as she was expecting over 60 horses to attend her schooling show at Oak View Stables in Olive Branch, MS. Visiting horses were treated to well-maintained show grounds and a friendly atmosphere. Participants came from Mississippi and surrounding states. The cities of Memphis, Tupelo, Oxford, and New York, by way of Oak Hill Stable in Oxford, MS, were represented.
Schooling shows are an important stepping stone for many horses and riders. Ellen Gregory brought her four-year-old Welsh pony Andy (Fine and Dandy) from Columbus, MS for his first show. Ellen’s mom explained that her daughter likes to start ponies and then sell them. She is a C-2 pony clubber, and she hopes to be a horse trainer when she “grows up.” Shows like the Oak View schooling show have given Ellen great horse experience.
Classes for Oak View schooling shows are split between a beginner ring and a more advanced ring, with cross entries not allowed. Schooling in the arenas before the shows is limited to eight horses at a time, which keeps the traffic in the schooling arena to a manageable level for beginners. Additional schooling is available all day in an adjacent area. This is 34th year of sponsoring schooling shows, boarding and training horses and their riders in the Memphis and the mid-south area.
