Carriage Bells Ring in Harbortown Enjoyed this beautiful neighborhood with our horses and carriages By Wanda Chancellor Were they listening as carriage bells rang in Harbortown on Sunday afternoon? The Nashoba Carriage Association, with the help of organizer Brooke Ballenger, got permission to take their December Drive to the River to enjoy Harbortown. "We wanted to enjoy this beautiful neighborhood at Christmas with our horses and carriages and we hope we added a bit of Christmas spirit as we drove through," said Ballenger. Wind whistled off the River as carriage drivers navigated Harbor Drive traffic and crossed into one of Memphis' most charming neighborhoods. Residents heard the bells and came out on their porches to watch the horses and their decorated carriages driven by bundled up members of the driving club. Six members with their carriages enjoyed the sights of Harbortown architecture, enhanced by Christmas decor, as they slowly moved through the streets with bells ringing. Bob and Lynn Martin led the parade with their pair of Friesian draft horses. Walter and Kathryn Foster and Ann Snowden put their pairs together to form a four-in-hand of Haflinger draft ponies, complete with Santa Claus hats! Robin Jackson drove her Arab, dressed in a red blanket. Wanda Chancellor and Joanna Wilburn each drove their Welsh ponies, with members Jan Robbins and Brenda Rachor accompanying as grooms. The drive ended with a tailgate party complete with hot chocolate and other goodies. " We never go anywhere without eating," said President Anne Snowden.
