TN HS Rodeo Gives Special Needs Special Attention 50 participants were equipped with a cowboy hat and a smile By Aubrey Hodges, THSRA Queen On October 3, 2009, the dreams of many special kids and adults came true in Cookeville, TN at the Tennessee High School “Special Needs Rodeo.” On Saturday afternoon around 120 rodeo contestants strutted onto the arena floor to meet their new pal! After everyone became acquainted with their pals, the rodeo kicked off with a grand entry, led by the Tennessee High School Rodeo Queen Miss Aubrey Hodges; following closely behind were the future rodeo stars. Each of the nearly 50 participants was equipped with the essentials: a cowboy hat and a smile. After a rousing lap to “Rocky Top,” every contestant spent the afternoon visiting various stations set up in the arena. Every station, from dummy roping to mechanical bull riding, brought out a special talent for each of the kids. Even the most challenging task of horse back riding was accomplished during this two-hour event. After this rodeo was over, a few participants got to partake in the actual Rodeo Grand Entry later that night. “The smiles and cheers from the audience were exuberant!” said Tennessee High School Rodeo student President Clay Mitchell. The grand entry received a standing ovation from the audience in the Hyder- Burks Agricultural Pavilion at Tennessee Tech University. The contestants of the THSRA showed that special needs deserve very special attention.
