Why We’re Selling the Farm The Newcomes are not moving back to city life by Becky Henley Nine years ago Chris and Julie Newcome moved to Tate County, Mississippi from Memphis because Chris’ dream was to hunt on his own land. The Newcomes eventually built fences so they could have their horses on their property. They also had a well dug and septic system put in. They first lived in a singlewide mobile home until they could build their 3-bedroom, 2-bath house. A few years later they installed, with help from family, a 50 X 50 metal building for their barn. When winter came, Chris and Julie built the wood stalls from a sketch of the barn Julie had drawn years before. Their dreams taking shape with lots of hard work. Chris’ dream to hunt on his own land came true. One deer season he shot a deer and walked out to make sure that deer was dead. Certain the deer was a goner, Chris walked back to get the tractor to pull the venison to the barn. Driving back he saw the deer jump up and run away. There’s more to the story, but space is limited. The motto must be, “Try, try again.” The Newcomes love country living, the peace and quiet and friendly people in their community. On their 34.9 acres they have 5 acres of Tifton 44 for raising their own hay. There is a stocked pond and lots of trees and flowers. They have raised quite a few foals over the years on their farm. Unlike most of these stories, the Newcomes are not moving back to city life. Theirs is a happy continuance and expansion of their dreams.
