West TN Quarter Horse Association Show July 23-27 The West Tennessee Quarter Horse Association had “close to 2,000 entries,” Jill Dinning said, at their July 23-27 show at the ShowPlace Arena, Memphis, TN. The show included some new and non-traditional classes. Pleasure driving and jumpers were featured on Thursday night. Saturday’s classes included a Slot Class for 2-year-olds. Exhibitors purchased a limited number of slots for their 2-year-olds in April. In addition to the $300 per slot, WTQHA added $1,000 to the jackpot for 2-year-olds bred from West Tennessee Breeders Futurity horses. The class had 100% payback. Saturday night’s classes included a non-pro Western class with a Calcutta. Jill explained that people could bet on the horses to win. “If your horse wins, you got 60% of the pot.” The Ice Cream Social on Friday night benefitted the Youth fund. There were also a silent auction and a stall raffle to raise funds for the Youth Team to go to Congress. Dr. Ellen Deming and Harold Wayne Jumpers celebrated their First Wedding Anniversary at the show. They were married at the show last year. Haskell Sheeks, who has been the announcer for the show for 20 years, was presented with a “very nice” 20X Stetson hat. There has been a running joke about the hat he normally wears, an older, Australian style hat. Folks figured if he were going announce at Quarter Horse shows, he needed a proper hat to wear. Two $500 Youth College Scholarships were presented at the show on Sunday to Jessica Diel and Laura Clarke. Judges for the show were Cindy Chilton Moore, Nancy Swarm, Dave Whitaker, Doyle Meadows, Glenn Wells, Buddy Fisher, Brian Holmes, James Rudolf, and Charles Crowe.
