How Gypsy Got Her Name Born June 19 By Linda McCaig, Flora Farms This APHA filly, named Gypsy, was born June 19 at Flora Farms. She has a medicine hat and two blue eyes. Her dam is Gringos Lil Star; her sire is Ima Calico Leaguer. Within eight hours of her birth, she escaped from the paddock and was roaming around the area. After reuniting mare and foal, we thought all was well, but Gypsy had other ideas. At 3:30 a.m. the next morning we were awakened by a loud neighing and sounds of the mare running against the panels of her paddock. Rushing outside, we found Gypsy free and exploring the world, out of the view of her frantic mother. We rounded her up, guided her back through the gate, and left her nursing happily. We returned to the house hoping for a couple more hours of sleep. To our dismay, at 5:30 a.m. Gypsy was out again! For the third time in 24 hours we returned her to her paddock. A little investigation revealed that her favorite napping spot was in a low corner of the pen, which allowed just enough space for her to slide under a corner panel. Once this escape route was blocked, things returned to peace and quiet at Flora Farms, at least as quiet as it ever gets on a horse farm. And that’s how Gypsy got her name!
