Mid-South Veterinarian Recognized for Expertise in Veterinary Dentistry Dr. Stephen Galloway Dr. Stephen Galloway of Animal Care Hospital in Oakland, TN has been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry (AVD) and is one of four veterinarians who have passed the credentialing requirements in equine dentistry. The AVD (www.avdonline.org) is an international organization that recognizes veterinarians who have advanced training and demonstrated competency in all disciplines of animal dentistry, i.e., Preventative Dentistry, Endodontics (root canal therapy), Exodontics (tooth extraction), Periodontics (oral gum & bone disease), Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry (tooth cavity repair), and Oral Surgery. The AVD credentialing process includes a five year post-doctorate training program, and fellowship is awarded after passing both written and practical board examinations. Fellow AVD is the only equine dental certification recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Veterinary Dentistry. In addition to practicing dentistry, Dr. Galloway is actively involved in teaching veterinarians, veterinary students, and horse owners. He served on the Dental Education Committee for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) from 2006 through 2008 and has presented at several universities as well as at local, state, and national level meetings. He is a contributing author to the 3rd edition of the text, Equine Dentistry, and has published papers in veterinary journals in the United States and Europe. Dr. Galloway reported the first case of correcting an equine cheek tooth malocclusion with an orthodontic appliance (braces), and continues to pursue novel therapies for equine dental disease. He is involved in scientific research projects individually and in collaboration with other veterinarians and universities.
