New Equine Rescue Center Operating In North Mississippi Last Chance Equine Rescue and Rehab Center’s stated mission is “...to provide rescue, rehabilitation, retirement, and adoption services for abused, neglected, abandoned, and unwanted equines as well as horses at risk of slaughter for human consumption overseas.” While horse slaughter for food has been outlawed in America, animals may still be shipped to Mexico and Canada where they are processed for food in the global market. Last Chance, located in Byhalia, Mississippi, is currently awaiting approval of its application for 501(c)3 non-profit status. The organization says it is 100% volunteer run, and has one main facility and two foster homes for the equines it takes in. Last Chance is a “non-kill, pro-animal” facility where horses receive “...love, kindness, food...medical, farrier, and dental care. Last Chance cares for all breeds of horses, and says it has placed over 25 horses which would have faced certain death in new homes. Adoption fees are based on the cost of care and training for each horse, and the group says all donations and adoption proceeds go toward care for incoming horses. All the horses have negative Coggins certificates, vaccinations, and are wormed every 8 weeks, have Natural Hoof Care every 6 weeks, receive Natural Horsemanship training, and are worked with every day.
