City Slicker Endurance Ride Report and Results by Terry Silver, Ride Manager The 12th Annual City Slickers Endurance Ride was held March 23rd and 24th, 2007 at Shelby Farms in Memphis, Tennessee. The weather was unseasonably hot and 125 competitors from FL, MI, WI, OH, IN, IL, KY, TX, OK, MO, MS, LA, AL, GA & TN worked very hard to keep their horses well hydrated with such extreme weather in March over the 25 and 50 mile courses each day. On Saturday the 24th, 20 first time riders braved the heat to ride in the introductory to endurance “Fun Ride”; this was a great learning experience for them on how to take care of their horses. Shelby Farms Equestrian Alliance, the sponsor of the City Slickers Endurance Ride would like to thank all the volunteers that came to help put on this endurance ride; Rick Richardson for helping design and flag 50 miles of trails, Nathan Lubin for contacting and coordinating the volunteers, Wes Mueller for making sure that all went well with the facilities, Ellen Hengesteg and Marilyn Lubin for providing the meals; and the Delta Ham Radio Club that was on the course for long hours both days, keeping track of the riders and their horses positions, and to all the local volunteers that came each day to help with veterinary checks, hauling water, secretarial work, etc., Thank you very much. The City Slickers Endurance Ride is a very unique endurance ride, it is the only endurance ride held within a city park in the United States. Without a very close working relationship between the “Alliance” and Shelby Farms, Park Superintendent, Steve Satterfield, this event would not happen. Mr. Satterfield helped clear the way for a very successful partnership between the “Alliance” and other park user groups, bikes, runners, to name a few, to jointly work and maintain the multi-use trails within the Park. The beginning and ending of the course goes along side the Agricenter International research fields, without the support of John Charles Wilson, and his great staff, Amy Barton, Mark Hoggard and Mike Pierce, the City Slickers Endurance Ride would also not be able to come together.
