Ole Miss Equestrian at Auburn
The Ole Miss Equestrian teams traveled to Auburn, Alabama for two IHSA (intercollegiate) shows hosted by the Auburn University IHSA Equestrian Team: Hunt Seat on Saturday, November 10 and Western on Sunday, November 11, 2018, wrapping up their fall show season for IHSA Zone 5, Region 2.
The Ole Miss Hunt Seat team took home 7th place out of 14 teams. Shannon Hourin, Ole Miss Equestrian Team President, reported on how well team members performed:
“Kiersten Ellis placed first in Advanced WTC (walk/trot/canter). Nora Heindel placed second in Intermediate Over Fences. Shannon Hourin placed second in Novice Flat. Nancy Newman placed third in Intermediate Flat. Parker Walters placed third in Novice Flat. Alexis Hunter placed third in Walk Trot.”
Coach Beanie Cone said the team took nine riders to this show and he was very excited about Kiersten’s first place in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter. “We have a lot of new freshman riders this year, but we also had a lot of good ribbons at the show,” Beanie commented.
Team rider Emory Barnes had a busy weekend, also competing at the WTHJA Harvest Time show (November 8-11). On Sunday, she was third in the WTHJA Hunter Derby and second in the David Q. Wright Equitation Classic with her horse Cascari.
Beanie is an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) team for next year, starting in December 2018. IEA is similar in design and function to IHSA, but is for student riders in grades 6-12, rather than college students. And members do not have to own a horse to join and compete at the shows. Anyone interested in joining should contact Hunters Edge Stables [www.huntersedgestables.com] or Beanie Cone at (901) 831-3890. Find more information about IEA at www.rideiea.org.

The Ole Miss Western team also has all new members this year. Coach Kevin McDavitt said he is “very excited about them! They are good riders and enthusiastic! But we’re just getting started.” Three riders attended the show at Auburn. Callie Foster rode in the Open. Carley Sheppard rode in Novice, and Emma Corkin rode in Intermediate. “The IHSA show at Alabama was Emma’s first show and, before joining the team, she had only done barrels and roping; this is her first experience at these kinds of competitions. But she has caught on very fast, and she got second place in a big class!” McDavitt said all the riders did very well at the show. Laura Marie Robinson is also on the team, but was unable to compete at this show because of health issues. She plans to be back riding at the spring shows in the Novice division.
McDavitt wants to recruit more riders to the team, so any Ole Miss students who are interested in showing should contact Kevin McDavitt at 662-403-8802. Find more information about the Ole Miss Equestrian Western Team at: https://www.olemissequestrian.com/western
