MSU Bulldog Classic
The Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville, Miss. was filled with Quarter Horses for the 3-day MSU Bulldog Classic AQHA Show March 9-11, 2017. The show featured a $225 Online Registration Flat Fee (including stall, entries, office and drug fees) and four judges: Tony Burris, Larry Little, Chele McGauly, and Karen Watters. New this year was the 3-year-old Jackpot Pleasure Class with $2500 added money. It will be an NSBA approved class next year. All Around Prizes were offered in Amateur, Open, Youth, Novice Youth, Novice Amateur, and Select.
Jon Barry, riding MM Good, was the 3-year-old Jackpot Western Pleasure winner, sponsored by Triple Crown Nutrition. Both Western and English High Point winner was Only A Natural, ridden by Elisabeth Driskell. The pair also won the Open Performance Horse High Point award.
Other High Point Winners:
Amateur- Suddensgotnosneakers, Sabrina Turner
Select Amateur - Won it Ona RV Machine Lisa Hawks
Novice Amateur - Gucci Lookin Good, Mary Beth Mcauley-Ross
Youth - A timely Version, Mcauley K Ross
Novice Youth - Amber Hot Rod, Ashlie Bell
Brinklee Miller, organizer of the show, said that there were 400 horses entered for each of the four judges. A plan for next year’s show is to get feedback from competitors in advance, about what classes they would like. Different show bills with different class options will be sent out and the competitors will get to vote on which one they like best.
Another concern that Brinklee expressed is the saturation of AQHA shows in the month of March within a 5 hour haul. There were 8 shows in 4 weekends in March 2017, which dilutes the number of competitors for each show, making for smaller classes and fewer points for each competitor. She plans to coordinate with AQHA to see if this problem can be resolved for next year.
