Fergus: A Horse To Be Reckoned With
It was delightful to receive the newest book by Jean Abernethy, Fergus: A Horse To Be Reckoned With. We are fans of Abernethy’s cartoons as well as a fan of Fergus.
This book could be a primer for those competing in Road to the Horse. Abernethy lays out the process, and progress, of a young lad calmly and patiently using the “natural horsemanship” method to gain Fergus’ trust and eventually ride him.
Abernethy portrays well the horse’s point of view, with Fergus’ thoughts and hilariously expressive reactions to the lad’s entreaties. From the beginning – of not wanting to have anything to do with the lad (ears back!), to enjoying the comfort of a shed and delicious hay, to his curious instinct, to enjoying the lad scratching all his itchy spots, and through the process of haltering, bridling, and saddling – Abernethy gets the horse’s reactions spot on!
You can probably guess the ending, but I won’t give that away. This is a fun read for both horse loving children and their parents. And the message about being kind to horses, understanding them, and giving them ‘space’ to be a horse is suitable for everyone. I reckon you’ll like the book!
Fergus: A Horse To Be Reckoned With is published by Trafalgar Square Books. See more of Jean Abernethy’s work and read more about her at: http://www.jeanabernethy.com/ and on facebook at Fergus the Horse.
